I was finally able to go to the Dream Cars exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art today. It started on May 3rd and going through August 23rd. If anyone is going to be in Indianapolis from now until the 23rd, I would highly recommend going. Check out the website !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . The exhibit takes you through five different eras: the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, and 2000’s. It was really awesome to see some super rare vehicles.

Surprisingly, I was able to take pictures, unlike most art exhibits. I have included the awful phone pictures below. Not only did I only have my phone but there were a lot of people there, so pictures could have been better and I wish I could have taken more.

First, the 1953 GM Firebird XP-21. Designed by Harley Earl. It looks more like an airplane than a car.

1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne. Designed by Gabriel Voisin and debuted at the 1934 Paris Auto Show. Had a roof that opened up on the tracks on the rear of the car.

Kinja'd!!!

1935 Type 57 Compétition Coupé Aerolithe. It was a recreation from 2007, because no one can find the original, but it was still made just like the one from 1935. Very striking.

Kinja'd!!!

1934 Ford 40 Speedster. Designed by Edsel Ford. The interior looked like a race car in the proportions.

Kinja'd!!!

1948 Tasco (The American Sports Car Company) Prototype. Designed by Gordon M. Buehrig. All the fenders covered the wheels and turned when the wheels did. It had a cool t-top too.

Kinja'd!!!

1936 Stout Scarab. Designed by William Bushnell Stout. It seated 7 people! Jalopnik’s resident car lawyer !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! did a great write-up on the Scarab back in January which you can read !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . The back end looks awesome.

1947 Norman Timbs Special. Designed by Norman Timbs. He made the car himself. This car is gigantic. It is hard to tell from the picture how long it really is. This was done in the 1940’s and was discovered in the desert intact in 2002. It was restored and showed to its new glory in 2010. Very pretty car.

Kinja'd!!!

1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt. Designed by Alex Tremulis. Only 4 exist today. One of the first cars with an electric retractable hardtop. It was designed to be very aerodynamic.

Kinja'd!!!

1955 Chrysler Streamline X (Gilda). Designed by Giovanni Savonuzzi and Virgil Exner. One of the most futuristic looking cars in the exhibit. Very cool interior. See a more in depth look at it !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

1951 General Motors Le Sabre XP-8. Another car designed by Harley Earl. The car was built of aluminum and magnesium making it fairly lightweight. Very striking car indeed.

Kinja'd!!!

1956 Buick Centurion XP-301. Designed by Harley Earl and Chuck Jordan. The most defining feature is the transparent bubble roof. It also had a camera that would project to a television screen on the dash to act as the rear view mirror.

Kinja'd!!!

1959 Cadillac Cyclone XP-74. Designed by Harley Earl and Carl Renner. This was Earl’s last dream car. The fenders look more like rockets than anything else. This car also had a transparent bubble roof.

Kinja'd!!!

1966 Ferrari 365 P Berlinetta Speciale “Tre Posti.” Designed by Pininfarina. Kind of looks like an elongated Dino. Very beautiful car. Had a beautiful trumpet exhaust. Read more and see more !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Kinja'd!!!

1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero. Designed by Marcello Gandini, head of Bertone. This thing is only 33 inches high. It is insane how low this car is.

2001 BMW Gina. Designed by Chris Bangle. The Gina is made out of a polyurethane coated Spandex.

Kinja'd!!!

2010 Porsche 918 Concept. Designed by Michael Mauer. The concept looks very similar to the production model. See the Jalopnik review !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Kinja'd!!!

1942 L’Œuf électrique (translated: the electric egg). Designed by Paul Arzens. 3-wheeler electric car that only weighed 770 pounds. Very bubble looking with the all plexiglass cockpit.

This was an awesome exhibit. It was very cool to see some awesome looking rare cars. My pictures don’t do any of these cars justice. You have to see them in person to really appreciate them. It’s interesting to see the change in automobile design over the years. Again, if you will be in Indianapolis before August 23rd, be sure to head over to the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and check out the exhibit. You will be happy you did.

Went and saw these about 3 weeks ago. Worth the price of admission for sure. IMA also has a great collection of mid-century modern furniture for those interested in such things.

The exhibit catalogue book is also only $30 if you’re not a pro photog and want great pictures of these cars.

Dat Stratos Zero...

It was so cool to see them in person and take in all the details you wouldn't normally get from a picture.
